Pipeline in the arctic

The Northern Contaminants Program (NCP) engages Northerners and scientists to research and monitor long-range contaminants in the Canadian Arctic. Long-range contaminants are transported to the Arctic through atmospheric and oceanic processes from other parts of the world. They remain in the Arctic environment and build up in the food chain. The call for proposals is announced in November of each year with results announced in late spring/early summer. The program funds about $4.1 million in research annually.

The US Department of Interior published yesterday the story of Esau Sinnok, Arctic Youth Ambassador, who lives Shishmaref, Alaska (population: 650). Shishmaref is a village that "is so remote that it is only accessible by airplane, and we only get fresh food products from other parts of Alaska every one to two months. If we can’t hunt and fish to feed ourselves in the winter, we will starve", Esau writes.

Paris, 4 December 2015 - The Philippines Commission on Human Rights (CHR) announced that it will launch an investigation on December 10 (International Human rights Day), which could hold fossil fuel companies responsible for the impacts of climate change, such as extreme weather events. This will be the world's first national human rights investigation into big polluters.

As energy companies retreat from exploration in the Arctic, Italy’s Eni SpA outlines the final preparation of the Goliat platform, the world’s largest and most sophisticated circular FPSO, which is well under way in the Barents Sea. Eni is set to begin pumping at its Goliat platform before the end of this year. It would open a flow that will eventually reach 100,000 barrels a day and place Eni among a select group of oil producers in the region.
