The first ever UArctic Congress will be held from Monday, September 12th through to Friday, September 16th in St. Petersburg, Russia, hosted by Saint Petersburg State University. Registration for the inaugural UArctic Congress 2016 is now open (early bird registration ends May 31, 2016, and late registration ends August 21, 2016).

DNV GL has recently announced that they approved the first vessel to comply with IMO Polar Code, which will became mandatory from January 1st, 2017. Although no mention was given about which polar class the vessel has been approved for, the announcement confirm once again the growing interest for Arctic sea-routes.

Arctic Portal news

The government of Iceland accepted this morning the proposal by the Prime Minister of Iceland to allocate funding to the operation of the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) secretariat for the next 5 years (2017-2021). The government decided to allocate 35 million Icelandic kroners annually (approx. 250.000 Euro) to the IASC secretariat office located in Akureyri.
