On Tuesday August 16th, an estimated 1,700 passengers and crew set sail from Alaska on a luxury cruise ship to take part in a journey across the Northwest Passage bound for New York. It is the first time that such a large luxury cruise ship is sailing through the maritime route at the northern end of North America.

At temperatures across the Arctic warm, thawing permafrost has the potential to release the powerful greenhouse gas methane into the atmosphere (thus promoting further climate warming). Thawing permafrost is also damaging infrastructure such as roads and buildings constructed on top of it.

During a meeting of the forum’s regional coordinators held in Anchorage between the 25th and 27th of July, 2016, Governor Bill Walker of the US State of Alaska signed an agreement with the Northern Forum, once again making the state a member of the international organisation. Governor Walker and Yuri Zakharinsky, Chairman of the Northern Forum's Regional Coordinators Committee, signed the official agreement at a ceremony during the meeting.

The Obama Administration recently issued its first Arctic-specific regulations governing any new oil exploration in US Arctic waters in the Chuckchi and Beaufort Seas off the coast of Alaska. The new rules apply specifically to exploratory drilling operations from floating vessels.

At the Arctic Coast Guard Forum (ACGF) held in Boston, Massachusetts (USA), the leaders of all eight Arctic Council member state coast guards have agreed to improve information exchange in the coming years, according to a statement released by US Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Paul Zukunft on Monday 13 June.

As the next preparedness exercise to be held in Montréal, Canada approaches, the Arctic Council recently announced that the “Agreement on Cooperation on Marine Oil Pollution Preparedness and Response in the Arctic”, which the eight Arctic Council Member States signed in 2013, was formally ratified in late March 2016.
