During the European Polar Boards Spring 2019 Plenary Meeting in Lisbon, elections were held for two Executive Committee positions. The EPB is happy to announce that Halldór Jóhannsson, Member Representative for RANNIS in Iceland and director of the Arctic Portal, and Vito Vitale, Member Representative for CNR in Italy, were both elected.

On the 25th of May Russia launched a nuclear-powered icebreaker from the dockyard in St Petersburg. Preparing its infrastructure and its ports to be ready for more traffic through the Northern Sea Route (NSR) which is believed to be navigable year-round in near future.

According to BBC News, Jakobshavn glacier one of Greenland most important glaciers is changing its behaviour. In the year 2000 it was the fastest flowing ice stream in Greenland, travelling at 17km a year and with its front end retreating and thinning by as much ass 20m year.

Last week was busy in relation to Arctic matters. First the Arctic Council ministerial meeting was held in Rovaniemi, Finland (7 May) and then the Arctic Circle Forum in Shanghai, China (10-11 May). After a controversial meeting in Rovaniemi most of the governement officials flew straight to the Arctic Circle Forum in Shanghai.

A really interesting and important project that is partly Icelandic called CarbFix is developing an industrial process to capture CO2 (carbon dioxide) and other sour gasses from emissions sources and permanently store it as rock in the subsurface. Furthermore, it is also possible that he process can be applied in relation to direct capture of CO2 from air.

At the 11th Arctic Council Ministerial meeting in Rovaniemi, Finland, Ministers of the eight Arctic States, leaders from the six indigenous Permanent Participant organizations and the Chairs of the six Working Groups of the Arctic Council met to mark the passing of the Chairmanship from Finland to Iceland.

The Final Program of the 2019 Arctic Circle China Forum, is now available. The Forum will be held 10 – 11 May in Shanghai. The Program lists over 150 speakers from Asia, Europe and North America in 25 sessions on topics including the Polar Silk Road, science and innovation, oceans, transport, energy and governance.

The US is fighting against climate change language in Arctic Council declaration, Arctic Today reports. Very similar to the Ministerial meeting in Salekhard in 2006, Halldór Jóhannsson of the Arctic Portal witnessed and recalls very clearly under the Bush administration.
