The original aim of the 2022 Arctic Yearbook, before the war started, was to explore, analyze, critique, and deepen our collective understanding of the Russian Arctic and its economy, politics and societies. As Russia was chairing the Arctic Council; as a coming oil, gas, and minerals boom was strengthening the Russian Arctic’s global influence; as pollution and climate change were reshaping the Arctic environment; and as Russian polities and peoples were demanding more attention and control, the editors saw it as critically important to collect open access, high quality, and informed studies on the Russian Arctic.

Circumpolar scientific cooperation in the Arctic is more important than ever at present challenging geo-political situation. The main purpose of the Arctic expert-to-expert initiative is continued dialogue and exchange of knowledge between transdisciplinary Arctic experts of all nations.
This dialogue should proceed in people-to-people format (in compliance with and bearing in mind the current regulations), be cross-disciplinary and focus on topics of mutual importance, such as problems associated with climate change and sustainability of the Arctic regions and communities.

On 8 November at the COP27 the COP27 Presidency announced the launch of Sharm-El-Sheikh Adaptation Agenda in partnership with the High-Level Champions – a comprehensive, shared agenda to rally global action around 30 adaptation outcomes that are needed to address the adaptation gap and achieve a resilient world by 2030.

The 27th Conference of the Parties or COP27 kicked off on 7 November in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. On the inauguration of the Climate Implementation Summit, more than 100 World Leaders gathered at COP27 to work towards implementation of existing climate agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol (adopted in 1997, entered into force 2005) and the Paris Agreement (adopted at COP21, 2015, entered into force 2016, the first legally-binding global treaty on climate change).

This year, World Food Forum 2022 brought together more than 2,000 people in person at FAO headquarters in Rome, from presidents to artists, scientists, investors, Indigenous Peoples and young leaders from around the world! With over 40,000 visits online, and registrants from more than 180 countries, WFF 2022 provided a unique hybrid experience from across the globe to ensure inclusivity and awareness.

The World Food Forum by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) takes place from 17 to 21 October 2022 with a special focus on “Healthy Diets. Healthy Planet”. The Forum brings together thousands of participants at the FAO headquarters in Rome that discuss food, science and innovation, and investment.

The Arctic Circle Assembly will take place in Reykjavík, Iceland on 13-16 October. The Assembly features 600+ speakers in over 200 sessions, numerous receptions, meetings and exhibitions on Arctic issues, climate change, clean energy and blue economy among other topics, will take place during the Assembly. Over 2000 attendees are predicted to participate from nearly 70 countries.
