The newly appointed U.S. special Arctic representative, former Coast Guard Commandant Robert Papp, has issued a call for ideas about policies that should be promoted at the Arctic Council once the United States assumes chairmanship of that eight-nation body next year.

This year, Operation Nanook, the Canadian military’s largest recurring operation in the North, will run from August 20 to 29, and will focus on Search an Rescue (SAR) operations in the waters off the country’s northern coast, and will feature two exercises.

V International Workshop on Circumpolar Socio-cultural Issues is to be held in Reykjavík, the capital city of Iceland, on September 25-26, 2014, organized by the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the University of Iceland, under the auspices of the International Association of Circumpolar Sociocultural Issues (IACSI).

Since 2006, 11 different states have appointed Arctic ambassadors or envoys, and on July 16th the United States became the 12th, with Secretary of State John Kerry naming Admiral Robert Papp, the recently retired commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, as its Special Representative to the Arctic.

The Institute of the North is excited to release the first 2014 Arctic Resource Governance Network research project. This project reviews and discusses the impact of electrical grid connectivity on social and economic development. This white paper explores the current electrical capacity in five communities—Anadyr, Hammerfest, Iqaluit, Nome, and Reyðarfjörður—in the circumpolar north, as well as the subsequent effects on local economic and social well-being.
