The National Snow & Ice Data Center (NSIDC) published on 16 September 2020 highly alarming results from their studies on mercury concentrations in fish in Alaska´s Yukon River. The study shows that mercury concentration in fish could surpass the EPA mercury criterion by 2050 if greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming are not constrained. The scientific research is led by Kevin Schaefer from the NSIDC and is the first of its kind.

The Icelandic Marine and Freshwater Research Instititute (MFRI) recently send its Research Vessel Árni Friðriksson out on a three-week capelin search expedition. A Greenlandic Research Vessel is also taking part in the search, which will focus on the area between Iceland and Greenland.

A well-preserved carcass of an extinct cave bear species (Ursus spelaeus) was recently found on Bolshoy Lyakhovsky island which is the largest of the Lyakhovsky Islands belonging to the New Siberian Islands archipelago between the Laptev Sea and the East Siberian Sea in northern Russia.

An interesting article written by Andrey Krivorotov has now been published in the China in World and Regional Politics: History and Modernity yearbook by the Institute of Far Eastern Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow). In the article Dr. Krivorotov explores the U.S. - China relation in the North Atlantic, its potential developments and impact on Arctic countries with emphasis on Russia.

Jim DeHart has been appointed the U.S. Coordinator for the Arctic Region by the U.S. Department of State. He will be serving as the principal advisor to the Secretary and the Deputy Secretary on all Arctic matters.

The 3rd international meeting of the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation on Arctic research co-operation, organized in co-operation between Iceland and Japan, has been postponed due to the effects of the COVID-19 epidemic. The meeting was to be held in Tokyo, Japan on 20-21 November 2020 but will instead take place on 8-9 May 2021.

On this day in 1990, Russia became an independent nation following the official adoption of the Declaration of Sovereignty of the Russian Federation, which was then followed by the establishment of the national anthem and flag.
