The United States Arctic Research Commission (USARC) has announced the appointment of Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy as a Commissioner, following a decision by President Donald Trump.

Mike Dunleavy - Arctic Ambassador

Governor Dunleavy brings extensive experience in Arctic policy and regional development. As the leader of the only U.S. Arctic state, he has been closely involved in issues shaping the region, including infrastructure, economic development, responsible resource use, and community resilience.

USARC emphasized that Alaska plays a central role in the nation’s Arctic research efforts, and highlighted the long-standing cooperation between the Commission and the State of Alaska in identifying research priorities and addressing the needs of Arctic communities.

Commenting on the appointment, USARC Chair Thomas E. Dans noted that the Governor’s experience will support the Commission’s work advising the President and Congress on Arctic research policy and strengthening collaboration among federal agencies, the State of Alaska, and Arctic stakeholders.

The U.S. Arctic Research Commission, established under the Arctic Research and Policy Act of 1984, is responsible for developing national Arctic research priorities and coordinating federal research activities in the region.

Governor Dunleavy’s appointment also marks a notable milestone, as he becomes the first sitting governor to serve on the Commission.

What is USARC

USARC, an independent federal agency, was established by the Arctic Research and Policy Act of 1984 to develop and recommend national Arctic research policy and priorities and to help coordinate the federal government’s Arctic research activities. It works closely with federal agencies, the State of Alaska, Alaska Native Organizations, and the research community to advance scientific understanding of the Arctic, to improve coordination of Arctic research with international partners, and to support informed decision-making for the region and the nation.
