On 12 May 2025, the Arctic Council Chairship will transition from Norway to the Kingdom of Denmark. The 14th meeting of the Arctic Council will be held in a virtual format. Delegations from the eight Arctic States, six Permanent Participant organizations, Working Groups and Expert Group and Observers have been invited to the meeting.

The meeting will mark the conclusion of the Norwegian Chairship of the Arctic Council (2023-2025) and the beginning of the Kingdom of Denmark’s Chairship (2025-2027).

Every two years, Arctic Council representatives meet to review work conducted during the previous Chairship period, approve new work plans for the Council’s subsidiary bodies for the incoming Chairship period and officially pass the gavel to the new Chair. The Arctic Council chairship cycle rotates on a fixed basis.

Meetings of the Arctic Council’s subsidiary bodies have resumed as of February 2024 to promote scientific and working-level cooperation, and to advance the Council’s critical work in addressing issues of environmental protection and sustainable development in the Arctic. In addition, the Norwegian Chairship has held regular meetings with Working Groups and Permanent Participants, as well as bilateral meetings with Arctic States throughout these last two years to facilitate and advance internal cooperation.

Norway’s Chairship of the Arctic Council elevated four priority areas: the oceans, climate and environment, sustainable economic development, and people in the North. Arctic Indigenous Peoples and youth were cross-cutting priorities during Norway’s Chairship. More information about the Norwegian Chairship of the Arctic Council can be found here.
