Meaningful Collaborations in Polar Research & Polar CommunitiesThe Polar Impact Mentorship Initiative invites members of the polar research community to a thought-provoking panel discussion exploring what makes collaborations "successful."

The event, scheduled for February 28 from 10-11 a.m. EST | 3-4 p.m. GMT, will bring together experts from various disciplines to discuss the benefits of interdisciplinary research, engagement with policy and decision-makers, and collaboration with Indigenous and local communities.

This hour-long discussion is designed for individuals at all stages of their careers, from early-career researchers to seasoned experts. Attendees will gain valuable insights into effective collaboration strategies and how different sectors can work together to address complex challenges in the polar regions.

The Polar Impact Mentorship Initiative is part of Polar Impact, an international network committed to supporting and connecting racial and ethnic minorities in polar sciences. Through mentorship, outreach, and community-building efforts, Polar Impact seeks to create an inclusive and diverse polar research community.

The discussion will feature a distinguished panel of researchers with expertise spanning Indigenous sustainability, climate change impacts, Antarctic marine ecology, and Arctic phytoplankton.

  • Dr. Heather Sauyaq Jean Kwamboka Gordon (Sauyaq Solutions, American University, University of Alaska Fairbanks) – Specializes in Indigenous research, sustainability, and technical assistance.
  • Dr. Lauren Miller (University of Virginia) – Studies ice-sheet changes and coastal evolution through geological records.
  • Hugo Guímaro (University of Coimbra, Marine and Environmental Science Centre, British Antarctic Survey) – Focuses on Antarctic marine animal ecology and serves as APECS President.
  • Dr. Clara J. M. Hoppe (Alfred Wegener Institute) – Researches Arctic and Southern Ocean phytoplankton and ecosystem changes.
