Landsvirkjun, Icelands National Power Company, www.landsvirkjun.is has informed large users in the northern and eastern parts of the country that there will be reductions in the supply of electricity to them from November 23.
Tomorrow, October 24, the previously announced reductions for large users in the southwestern part of the country will also take effect, as Landsvirkjun reports.
It is noted that it is not possible to predict how long these reductions will last, but it can be expected that it will last until next spring. Landsvirkjun has also encouraged large users to reduce load and look at the possible resale of electricity for that purpose. It also says that these are similar measures to the reductions that were taken earlier this year.
"The reason for this is, now as last year, the bad state of reservoirs. Þórisvatn was far from full in the fall and the drawdown of the reservoir has been very strong. The summer was dry and cold in the highlands and the melting of glaciers was low. At the same time, there has been a continuous transfer of electricity from the North and East to the South in order to equalize the transmission situation between parts of the country. "Due to limitations in Landsnet's transmission system, (the natinal power grid), cuts were not made in the north and east until now," the announcement says.
Landsvirkjun emphasizes that reductions are according to contracts and it is only reducing energy that Landsvirkjun and its customers have agreed can be reduced when the level of intermediate reservoirs is low.
