Today, 13th of February 2013, the Ambassador of Canada to Iceland, Mr Stewart Wheeler held the meeting at the University of Akureyri, northern Iceland. The Canadian representative updated the Icelandic – Arctic network on current Canada´s Arctic Council (AC) chairmanship issues and initiatives.
The deputy chief of mission highlighted special focus that was given to Northerners 'participation in the mission of the AC. He stressed out that there are over four million people, living in the eight Arctic states that make up the AC and call that region Home.
Mr Wheeler reminded the theme of Canada´s chairmanship, which is: "The development for the people of the North" with a focus on responsible Arctic resource development, safe Arctic shipping, search and rescue operations, education and sustainable development of circumpolar communities.
The Ambassador discussed Iceland´s engagement in AC initiatives and expressed his satisfaction with cooperation of two governments.
